(Check out the full history of Irish Ultimate here!) Ultimate in Ireland today Today, while we’re still a very tight knit community you’ll often hear the older members exclaim in shock that they "don’t recognise any of the people on this team!” despite the fact that it is a college team from Galway and they’re from Dublin and have been out of college for years! This is a clear sign that our sport is growing and that more and more people are getting involved. For years it wouldn’t have been a surprise if you knew personally everyone that played Ultimate in Ireland. Lead by a few dedicated individuals it slowly developed and got footholes in the universities and colleges, from where clubs were born and the thriving Irish Ultimate community of today was established. Its origins in a hippy culture are evident in the flexibility of the sport, the minimum equipment required and the spirit of respect expected of all participants. Ultimate Frisbee originated in the 1970’s in the U.S.A.
